Dropping The Ball On New Year Celebrations – Gayle Hoefker ucg.org
For much of the world January 1st is the accepted and celebrated start of a new year. At the stroke of midnight, a new day and new year is brought in with cheers, singing, drinking and fireworks. What could be the harm?
Through its pagan roots, its traditions closely tie it to that of Christmas. The problem with these celebrations is that they act as counterfeits that conceal the truth.
First, the much-anticipated countdown to midnight is not bringing us to the actual start of a new day. Genesis 1:5 establishes the start of the day occurs at sunset.
Second, through the use of various pagan inspired calendars throughout history, the New Years holiday has, in part, concealed the calendar established by God. A lunar/solar based calendar that, scripturally, was set in motion from the beginning. (Gen 1:14-18)
And third, It has hidden the scripturally fixed start of a year. The first of Abib was designated as the starting point. A day typically landing in March or April of our Gregorian based calendar.
On the surface these changes may seem inconsequential. But because of this deception what has been lost to most are God’s Holy Days, days which reveal the very plan of God and are laid out according to the start of each biblical new year and new day.
