In the quest for salvation, varying beliefs emerge—some emphasizing mere belief or grace, while others suggest a set of regulations for a better afterlife. The truth lies in understanding the dynamic relationship between grace, repentance, and obedience.

Is obedience contrary to accepting God’s grace? Post-grace, what does God expect? Misunderstandings persist about repentance and obedience, leading to confusion about their role in salvation.

When asked, “Have you been saved?” many overlook the profound connection between repentance and baptism. Examining Peter’s response on Pentecost unveils the necessity of both for forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Repentance, rooted in a transformative change of thinking, is pivotal. Genuine repentance involves deep sorrow for transgressions, aligning with God’s law of love. It is more than acknowledging sin intellectually; it’s a heartfelt commitment to live by God’s word.

On the Day of Pentecost, 3,000 responded to Peter’s call for repentance and baptism. Repentance, defined as thinking differently and rejecting sin. This precedes baptism, symbolizing burial of the old self. Worldly, human sorrow is distinct from godly sorrow, not leading to salvation.

The question arises: Does grace provide a license to sin? Romans 6:1-2 emphatically rejects it. A genuine repentant, baptized Christian walks in newness of life, acknowledging that grace doesn’t justify willful disobedience.

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role post-baptism, empowering spiritual growth. This Spirit is given to help those baptized to obey, as demonstrated by the Apostles’ actions. Obedience remains central, illustrated by Peter’s declaration to obey God rather than men.

Salvation, a free gift, demands a response of repentance, belief, and obedience. Ephesians 2:8-9 underscores grace and faith as God’s gifts, but verse 10 highlights our role—created for good works.
