There is an interesting connection between Jesus and Abraham in Scripture. In John 8, Jesus says, “Abraham rejoiced to see My day,” as though they were friends. Abraham knew of His coming and was glad. But how could Abraham have known Jesus?
Let’s go back to Genesis. Abraham meets a mysterious figure: Melchizedek, the “king of Salem” and “priest of God Most High.” Melchizedek blesses Abraham, shares bread and wine, and receives a tithe. But who was Melchizedek?
Scripture describes Melchizedek as “without father or mother… without genealogy… without beginning or end…”—eternal. Hebrews even connects him to Jesus as an eternal High Priest. It appears from these descriptions that Melchizedek was the preincarnate Christ.
Abraham met and talked with God in human form, and through these interactions, he learned about and looked forward to Christ’s future coming. These conversations shaped his faith and gave him hope. Like Jesus called the disciples, Abraham was His friend, as are those whom God calls today.
