The Bible presents God as a spirit (John 4:24), and angels are also spirits (Hebrews 1:13-14), suggesting that the entire spirit realm is composed of spirit, unlike the material world, which is made up of matter. This means that everything associated with God’s presence—including His throne (Ezekiel 10:1) and the heavenly sanctuary represented by the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:17, 22)—is of a spiritual nature.

The Holy Spirit is described as the power God uses to accomplish His will (Acts 1:8; 2 Timothy 1:7), akin to energy in the physical world, yet vastly beyond it. The Holy Spirit was central in miracles like the conception of Jesus (Luke 1:31-35), where Gabriel told Mary that “the power of the Highest will overshadow you,” showing the Holy Spirit as the divine force that brought Jesus into the world.

There is no way for matter to impact the spirit realm; no physical element—fire, walls, or barriers—can affect or restrain spirit beings. However, spirit beings can affect the material world, as seen in angelic appearances to humans (such as Gabriel’s appearance to Mary), or events like the parting of the Red Sea, the Flood, and many other miracles.

Science has suggested theories for the universe’s origin, but these theories remain incomplete without understanding what existed before the material realm. The Bible tells us that God, existing as spirit, created the material universe. As Hebrews 11:3 states, “what is seen was not made of things that are visible.” God’s creative power, outside of space and time, brought all matter into existence. This highlights the unique nature of the spirit realm, which exists independently and eternally, beyond the material limitations of the physical universe.
