How To Search For Truth – HWA cogiw.org
Through this article we are asked a simple question, how do we search for “truth”? So many accept their beliefs or opinions as truth. Why is this? One reason presented is habit. We are born without knowledge. We grow up accepting what we are taught starting with our parents, and this continues all the way through our formal education. Learning to accept what we read and are told with little critical thought. As adults so many accept as fact what they are told if it is said in the name of science. We forget scientists are fallible humans with potential for preconceived ideas, biases, corrupted motives, and tainted hypotheses building to flawed conclusions. This pattern of accepting what we repeatedly hear is best demonstrated in the power of advertising. As an example set forth, advertising is a driving force of our modern world because of our willingness to believe what we hear. Truth also contends with our desire to be accepted and to be right. To know truth, we must address all of this within our own life. The Bible tells us to “prove all things”. That said, within our mind we will struggle the most. We need the strength to go against the tide of accepted thought when it’s in conflict with truth. Finally is our lifelong battle to admit when we are wrong and avoid our tendency to justify our fallacies. Where do we find truth? A starting point simply stated by Christ, the Bible “is truth” and “a lamp…to light your path”.
