Finding Encouragement in Day of Atonement Fasting truthsum.org
For many, the Day of Atonement is a challenging Holy Day. Fasting can be uncomfortable, even daunting, yet it carries profound encouragement for God’s people. It’s more than abstaining from food—it’s a tool for spiritual growth, physical renewal, and resilience in faith.
God designed our bodies to respond powerfully to fasting. Studies show fasting triggers a kind of immune system “reset”, clearing damaged cells and stimulating regeneration (Medical News Today; Cell Journal). The brain also adapts, turning to fat for energy, which can enhance mental clarity, focus, and learning (Huberman Lab).
Fasting also draws us closer to God. Scripture is filled with examples—Moses, Esther, Elijah—showing that fasting aligns the heart with God’s will. It’s a way of saying, “I need You more than I need food. I depend on You more than I depend on my most basic needs.”
Finally, fasting strengthens us to resist spiritual challenges. Jesus taught that certain obstacles require both prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21). Fasting equips us to wield God’s armor in spiritual battle, giving endurance and strength beyond our natural ability.
Though the Day of Atonement fasting is physically challenging, it’s a gift. It reminds us of God’s care for our body, mind, and spirit, and of the power we can access through faith. In our weakness, we find His strength.
