This author seeks to challenge the reader with facing hard truths. Truth is truth whether we believe it, like it or ignore it and the same could be said of its source. Hard truth, that which challenges you or maybe makes you feel uncomfortable should not be feared. In fact, that is the very truth we should seek out because to avoid it is to avoid reality. To do this requires an understanding of how we shield ourselves from the pain of reality. First, we seek out self-affirming information that supports what we want to believe. Second, we use emotion instead of sound reason to make desired decisions. Fear is a powerful motivator, but we should not be controlled by it. We often fear knowing truth because facing it requires questioning self and applying personal change. We are brought full circle with this quote. “What does a life of total dedication to the truth mean? It means a life of continuous and never-ending stringent self-examination…a willingness to be personally challenged.” ( M. Scott Peck)
