What Will Happen When You Die? – Stuart Wachowicz tomorrowsworld.org
Since the beginning of human history, mankind has wrestled with the question of what happens after death. Is death the end of existence, or does some conscious part of a person continue living?
Across cultures and civilizations, people have developed many different answers. Ancient societies often believed that a spiritual part of a person survived death. The Egyptians, for example, believed each person possessed multiple spiritual components that continued after death. To preserve these spirits, they carefully embalmed bodies and filled tombs with goods thought necessary for the afterlife. Much of their wealth and effort went toward preparing for what they believed awaited beyond death.
Other cultures developed different ideas. Some traditions teach reincarnation, where a soul is reborn again and again in new forms. Many Western religious traditions believe that a person possesses an immortal soul that immediately departs the body at death and is judged, receiving eternal reward in heaven or punishment in hell.
But where did these ideas originate? Historians note that many concepts about the immortal soul were shaped by ancient Mesopotamian beliefs and later developed through Greek philosophy. Influential thinkers such as Plato taught that the soul is inherently immortal. Over time, these philosophical ideas influenced religious traditions that later identified themselves as Christian.
Yet the Bible presents a very different picture. Scripture states that man became a “living soul” (Genesis 2:7), meaning a living being, not a body containing an immortal spirit. The Bible also declares plainly: “The soul who sins shall die” (Ezekiel 18:4). Rather than teaching innate immortality, the Bible reveals that eternal life is a gift from God (Romans 6:23).
Instead of an immortal soul living on after death, the Bible consistently points to a future resurrection—when God will restore life and grant immortality to those He calls.
