The Son Makes Us Free – Brian Orchard leadingtolife.org
The Hedgehog Review, an intellectual publication, explores deep philosophical and ethical questions. One article begins with the question: “How do we foster the conditions conducive to a truly enduring moral and ethical order?” Intellectuals seek this order, often examining Critical Theory from the Frankfurt School, including Theodore Adorno’s work. One study titled “Glimpses of Light from Enlightenment’s Prison” critiques the Enlightenment as a restrictive framework.
Adorno’s perspective aligns with the idea that Western civilization confines the human mind. As God’s people, we must examine our thoughts and actions against His truth, particularly as we approach the Passover season. Self-examination reveals the contrast between God’s plan of freedom and Satan’s world of bondage. Christ offers true liberty: “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36). This freedom comes through being called, receiving the Holy Spirit, and embracing God’s truth.
Mankind’s bondage began with Adam’s sin, cutting humanity off from the Tree of Life. But redemption is possible through Christ: “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive” (1 Corinthians 15:22). Israel’s history foreshadows this, as God redeemed them from Egypt, a symbol of bondage. The concept of a kinsman-redeemer in Leviticus reflects Christ’s role in our salvation.
True freedom is liberation from self, as self-worship leads to destruction (2 Timothy 3:1-5). Paul emphasized Christ’s power and resurrection, urging believers to stand firm in faith. Through the everlasting covenant, Christ works in us, transforming our nature (Hebrews 13:20-21).
Living “in Christ” grants knowledge of good and evil from God’s perspective, enabling us to uphold His commandments with understanding. Jesus declared: “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). Only through Christ’s sacrifice and the Spirit of truth can we cultivate a lasting moral and ethical order.
