Godly Church Governance – Brian Orchard leadingtolife.org

Church governance has often been shaped by human interpretations, with many systems reflecting autocratic, top-down authority. Historically, the Church adopted this style of leadership, which led to a “lordship” model of governance. This approach, while logical from a human perspective, contrasts with God’s governance, which is modeled on His family structure: authority flows from the Father to the Son, and then to human leaders. A family-style hierarchy, as described in Ephesians 5:21-33, reflects this divine structure, where authority is exercised with love and care.

In the family, the husband is the head, tasked with loving and guiding his wife and children as Christ loves the Church. This love comes from his submission to Christ, who is the ultimate head. Similarly, Church leaders are called to lead with love, guiding the flock toward a deeper relationship with Christ and the Father. Ministers should not be overlords but serve as examples, inspiring others through their actions. The role of the ministry is to equip the saints, not to control their lives or impose heavy-handed authority.

Some may prefer rigid governance for the security of clear guidelines. However, true family governance is based on internal motivation and personal submission, not external pressure. Just as a husband leads with love and submission to Christ, Church leadership must be grounded in a similar spirit of service and care. Ultimately, the Father and Jesus Christ are the ones who bring spiritual growth, as no one can work out salvation for another.
