A Journey Through Church History: The Enduring Legacy of the Church of God truthsum.org
The Church of God traces its spiritual roots to the first-century believers described in the New Testament—not as a denomination, but as a faithful body of believers led by the Holy Spirit. Through the centuries, it has endured persecution, doctrinal compromise, and institutional upheaval, yet it continues as a living remnant devoted to biblical truth.
This history is often viewed through the lens of Revelation 2 and 3, where seven churches represent eras of spiritual development. The Apostolic era (Ephesus) gave way to persecution (Smyrna), compromise (Pergamos), and reform movements (Thyatira and Sardis), culminating in the 20th-century Philadelphian revival. Leaders like Herbert W. Armstrong helped restore biblical doctrines such as Sabbath-keeping, the holy days, and the gospel of the Kingdom.
Following Armstrong’s death in 1986, the Worldwide Church of God drastically changed its doctrines, leading to the rise of many Church of God fellowships. These groups continue to preserve core teachings while varying in governance and zeal. Some emphasize hierarchical leadership; others favor a family-style model centered on Christ as the Head.
Despite fragmentation, the Church’s identity is not tied to any one group or name. The true Church is defined by faithfulness to God’s commandments and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Through persecution and revival, its legacy endures as a call to remain faithful, finish the work, and follow Christ.
