A God of Order in a World of Chaos truthsum.org
We live in a chaotic world—morally, politically, spiritually. Yet from the opening words of the Bible, we’re introduced to a God of clarity and purpose: “In the beginning, God created…” What follows is structure and design. But then comes a puzzle—“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.” Why would a perfect God begin with chaos?
Scripture reveals that God doesn’t create disorder—He restores it. Clues throughout the Bible suggest a rebellion occurred between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2, possibly tied to the fall of Lucifer. The Hebrew word often translated as “was” in verse 2 can also mean “became,” implying that the earth became desolate—a result of judgment, not creation.
The six days that follow describe not the initial creation, but a restoration. God brings light where there was darkness, order where there was ruin. This pattern continues throughout the Bible: God restores what sin destroys.
Genesis is not just about beginnings—it’s about beginnings after ruin. And it points forward to a future restoration, when Christ will return to make all things new. The same Spirit that hovered over the waters in Genesis is still at work today.
