God is the God of joy and abundance. In addition to the weekly Sabbath, God declared we are to keep His seven annual holy days. The Feast of Tabernacles is observed for seven days followed by The Last Great Day on the eighth day. We celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles in temporary dwellings. The financial expenses for the feasts are covered by the second tithe, which is in addition to the first tithe. God commands us to set aside ten percent of our increase for the express purpose of gathering before Him for worship and fellowship. Unlike the first tithe, we personally use the second tithe so we may gather before God joyously: “for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep, for wine or similar drink, for whatever your heart desires; you shall eat there before the LORD your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household.” In fact the second tithe is also referred to as the “festival tithe”. Although the second tithe is used personally and for family members, it is also shared with others with lesser means so that they may too rejoice before God. Although the majority of the second tithe is used for the Feast of Tabernacles, it is also used for the other Holy Days to a lesser degree. The second tithe, like the first tithe, is not a burden – but a means for rejoicing and worshipping God where He places His name.
