The Day God Made for Us: Rediscovering the Sabbath truthsum.org
Before Israel, Sinai, or sin, God set apart a day:
“Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it” (Genesis 2:3, NKJV).
The Sabbath was woven into creation – not for one nation, but for all humanity (Mark 2:27). It is a gift, a sign of covenant, and a rhythm of rest pointing to God’s Kingdom (Exodus 31:13; Hebrews 4:9).
Yet history shows a pattern of forgetting. Israel neglected it, prophets rebuked it, and by Christ’s time, human regulations had turned it into a burden. Jesus restored its purpose, declaring Himself “Lord of the Sabbath” (Matthew 12:8).
After the apostles, the Church gradually shifted to Sunday – not by biblical command, but through Roman culture, sun worship, and political decree. In A.D. 321, Constantine ordered rest on “the venerable day of the Sun,” cementing the change.
Today, many say, “Jesus is my Sabbath.” While He offers spiritual rest (Matthew 11:28–30), Hebrews 4:9 affirms Sabbath-keeping (sabbatismos) still remains for God’s people. Christ didn’t abolish the Sabbath – He revealed its deeper meaning.
The Sabbath is not legalism – it is love. A gift of time to rest, remember, and return to God. A sign of identity and trust, reminding us that one day, temporary rest will give way to everlasting peace.
