Growing up, I never realized how many different views exist about Jesus’ nature. Beyond simply asking, “Do you believe in Him?” there are deeper questions: Who is He? Where did He come from? What is His relationship to God? Most of us adopt one view early and assume it’s universal. Researching and reading different perspectives revealed how vastly beliefs vary—some see Jesus as fully God and fully man; others view Him as divine but not God; still others as a pre-existent spirit-child of the Father.
Curious, I explored these views—not to argue, but to understand. This deepened my appreciation for the Church of God perspective: Jesus is one of two eternal divine Beings, distinct yet united in purpose. Pre-incarnate as the Word, He voluntarily submitted to the Father, became fully human, and experienced life and mortality while remaining eternal.
Scripture supports this understanding. The Father and Son are distinct yet united (Genesis 1:26; John 1:1–3; Colossians 1:16), perfectly aligned in purpose (John 10:30; Philippians 2:5–8), and active in creation and Old Testament interactions (John 1:18; Matthew 11:27). The Word became flesh, experiencing full humanity (John 1:14; Luke 2:52; Hebrews 2:14,17), humbling Himself while maintaining divinity (Philippians 2:5–8) and voluntarily submitting to the Father (John 14:28; 1 Corinthians 15:27–28), dying and rising to glorified life (Hebrews 1:3; Luke 22:42).
This view preserves Scripture’s consistency, fully honors Jesus’ humanity and divinity, and highlights God’s relational, purposeful plan—an invitation to see salvation and the divine family in a new light.
