“It Is Finished” – But What Was Finished? truthsum.org
When Jesus declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30), He wasn’t saying the entire plan of salvation was complete. He didn’t say “I am finished”—He said it was. The mission given to Him at that time—living a sinless life, preaching the gospel of the Kingdom, and offering Himself as our Passover Lamb—was fulfilled.
But that wasn’t the end. It was the turning point.
The gospel Jesus preached was not just about His sacrifice, but about the coming Kingdom of God. That Kingdom had not yet come at the cross. The resurrection, the judgment, the restoration of all things—those are still ahead.
After the crucifixion, Jesus rose, taught His disciples, sent the Holy Spirit, and continues to intercede for us. The story isn’t over. In fact, we’re living in the middle of it.
The modern idea that “Jesus did everything, there’s nothing left but belief” misses the bigger truth: Christ’s sacrifice opened the way—but we are still called to follow, endure, and prepare for His return.
His death was not the end of the gospel story—it was what made the rest possible.
